SKU: RPM Category:

The Reef Power™ RP-M is Reef Breeders new take on the conventional wave-maker. The RP-M is incredibly slim, yet powerful and quiet. Every Reef Power Pump includes a fully featured controller, extended warranty, and extra gear.

  • Unbelievably thin profile
  • Full Featured Controller
  • 18-Month, USA warranty
  • Fully submersible
  • Extra-Long Power Cord (78″)
  • 260-2,600 gph ouput
  • Glass up to 5/8″ thick

Ultra Slim Profile

The RP-M is about half the size of conventional powerheads with comparable output. For example, the QP-9 protrudes 3 7/8″ into the aquarium, while the RP-M protrudes only 2.25″. How do we do this? Simple! Instead of using a conventional impeller which protrudes from the motor block and generates a narrow vortex that is directed through a nozzle, we redesigned the impeller to rotate around the motor block. This both reduces the size of the pump by nearly 50%, and produces an extremely wide yet powerful flow. This unique flow pattern is both powerful and gentle on corals. Corals all around your aquarium experience a gentle wave motion, and corals directly in front of your RP-M powerhead don’t get blasted. Our new and improved impeller has more than twice the surface area of a conventional impeller with 4 blades instead of 2. This creates a more evenly distributed flow pattern and helps eliminate dead spots in your aquarium.

Fully Featured Controller Included

Every Reef Power RP-M includes an intuitive controller packed with features. There are 6 wave modes including reverse and constant mode, and a built in timer. In addition to the timer function there is both a 10 minute, and 20 minute feed mode. You can also set each pump to run independently, as a lead pump, or as a follow pump. One lead pump can control up to 16 following pumps, and any changes on the lead pump controller will automatically take effect on every follow pump controller- wirelessly. Every controller includes an adhesive mounting pad, as well as a built in mounting hole if you choose to use a screw/hook for more secure mounting.

Fully Submersible

Our Reef Power Pumps are 100% waterproof, including the external magnet. (The controller and power supply are NOT submersible 🙂 ). That means you can place your pump on your overflow box, or other small spaces that may be under water. There is NO dry side- just a small waterproof magnet that works on glass up to 5/8″ thick. The power cord going to the pump is 6′ 6″ long, which allows for stealthy routing with ease.

Extended Warranty

All Reef Power Pumps include a full 18 month warranty. All warranty service is handled in our Wakefield, RI USA facility.

Pleased with this pump. It is very low profile and almost ‘disappears’ on the back panel. Cord transmits vibration (as it does on all pumps) and can be a source of noise – but easily fixed. Not using the wireless function, and obviously cannot yet comment on longevity.

Finally swapped out my Vortech Mp10s for this pump as I was having issues with the magnet holding on my Redsea250 glass. Vortech recommended Mp40 instead. Did some research and super pleased with the Reef Power RP-M as my replacement. First off the magnets far surpass the Mp10 on this glass thickness which I sorely needed. The mode functions and ability to set my own schedule with a variation of modes to keep my tanks flow randomized is perfect. I was worried a Mp40 would be too much flow on this size tank luckily for me the RP-M has such a wide flow range. It allows me to utilize it to my specific needs. Hands down my favorite feature to my new pumps is reverse function. I would have never thought having two Mp10s on the tank would miss stirring up so many pockets of detritus buildup. I started testing just one RP-M roughly 6in from the surface to see what reverse function could do. I set it to the lowest power setting on reverse and was amazed at all the detritus it immediately pulled into the water column. Normally I would just be happy with a product and not bother leaving a review. However this was so impressive to me that I felt it deserved my personal experience. A+ product Reef Breeders keep up the outstanding performance products for us hobbyists.

I’ve had the RP-M in my 50g cube for a couple of months now and I’m quite happy with it. The biggest issue for me was the question of whether or not this pump would be too much for a 2’x2’x20″ cube. The answer is yes and no! It does seem to be a quite powerful pump and it moves a lot of water. If you put your hand in the water right in front of the pump you feel a lot of flow, and it seems to be much bigger diameter flow than with any other pumps short of the big gyre style. But the power of the strong flow seems to dissipate about 6″ to 12″ into the tank depending on which setting you use. Not that there isn’t water flow when you get that far out from the pump, but it is so widespread that it feels more like a big flow rather than a harsh narrow stream. Which is perfect in any aquarium!

A few other points of interest. It’s extremely easy to program. It’s absolutely dead quiet. It has a strong magnet that holds it in place very well on my 3/8″ glass. I love that I can dial down the flow during the night without actually turning it off.

You could tell right out of the box that this is a quality product. Once reading over the manual it was pretty easy to select a mode and get it going in the tank. Quiet, slim and powerful with a wide spread on the wave it makes. So far this baby has been killing any other wavemaker or powerhead I’ve used in my 12 year reefing experience. No idea why this isn’t talked about more because it is truly a different wavemaker and I’d recommend it 10/10!!

  5. Ryan Cordeiro (verified owner)

Awesome pump, super quiet, great controller. Loving it

  6. Finis C. (verified owner)

Nice functions. I like the broad flow. Quiet for me as well.

  7. David O. (verified owner)

I have this set up on my 20L frag tank running in the reef mode. The random flow pattern is excellent and it was extremely easy to set up. Excellent product.

  8. James G (verified owner)

Decent pump. Have two of these in a 200 gallon (48×40) tank. I had them cranked up in sync mode for wave pulse but these don’t produce enough power to make an actual wave effect in my tank. I do use them in reef crest mode at full power and they do a very nice job with flow. I would say the flow starts to taper off at the front of my tank (have them on the back). If they could make a model that has double the flow of these I fell it would have a better impact on larger tanks.

  10. Frederick Fitch (verified owner)

Thank you for your fast help!

  11. Sheila (verified owner)

The flow is gentle and well dispersed. My plan was to use it on the back glass behind the rocks. However, it sounds like a train and is very loud.

    • Logan Vanghele (store manager)

      Hey Sheila,

We sent you a new impeller, hopefully that will help you resolve the noise issue. In most cases noise can be eliminated by simply re-seating the impeller. It’s a 5 minute trick, and it needs to be done with some of these pumps as the impeller can get knocked askew in transit.

  12. tom7434 (verified owner)

It has been difficult to find the right wavemaker for my 75.2 Waterbox. Since it is a 24x24x24 cube, finding the right amount a flow has been tricky. I ended up with 2 RP-Ms and so far they have been great. Initially, one of them made a lot of noise. To resolve I removed the cover and re-seated the impeller and the noise disappeared. All and all a great product.

  13. Joshua (verified owner)

It works great. It’s simple to use, has the features I wanted and at a price I can appreciate. Reefbreeders has a homerun with this powerhead. Of course there was some noise at first…this is normal, but after a few weeks it quiets down. It is a powerful wide flow of water and is perfect for my tank.

  14. James (verified owner)

Works well, but the magnet is not quite strong enough for Red Sea Reefer 350 glass. Moving it to my frag tank which has thinner glass panels.

  15. myfirstfishtank

I love these pumps! I met Logan last year at MACNA Vegas, and had a chance to see and test his products. He was kind enough to send a couple products to sample and review. Well, it’s 9-months later and I love this pump so much, that I ordered a second! I’m setting up an SCA PNP 120 system, and am going to use two of these for my tank. Let’s quickly go over the pros and cons and then give our overall thoughts!

    – Affordable (< 1/2 the price of competitors)
    – Small- There is no "dry side" motor, just a tiny magnet, and the wet side is tiny!
    – Spread- I've owned and still own the top-of-the-line, name-brand pump, but what I love about this pump is it puts out a much wider spread of flow.
    – Programmable- Can program several different flow patterns and intensities.
    – Reverse Flow- You can turn on this pump, in reverse, to help pick up detritus
    – Customer Service- The team at Reef Breeders is great, and very responsive.

    – Controller is not intuitive and you will need the instructions to use.
    – Might be too strong for smaller tanks.
    – Cannot control wirelessly

Overall thoughts: When I first started in this hobby, I thought I needed the most expensive product to achieve the best results. But that has just not proven true. There are products, such as this wavemaker, that find the perfect middle ground between features, quality, and cost. While not as controllable as some of the high cost wavemakers, it will do everything you need and at a fraction of the price.

I unreservedly give this 5-stars and recommend it to all my followers/subscriber!

  17. lagunaedm (verified owner)

I purchased two of these for my 6ft 125 gallon and received them in the mail about a week ago.
They work great, and have a lot of different settings depending how powerful you want them to be or what current you are trying to make in the tank. I put both of mine on opposite ends of my tank so that I can simulate high tide and low tide with only one of them running at any time. There are a bunch of ways they could be used and they also help clear up my tank of detritus like nothing else. With the 18 month warranty and the fact that I’ve been impressed by everything I’ve purchased from this company I give these 5 stars, just like the photon v2+.

Thanks for making amazing products, with great warrantees that are also affordable.

I’m not experienced with wave makers. I’m new to reefing. Love function of rp-m and performance but it’s not silent. That may be all wave makers? It’s not obnoxious either. Priced great compared to others in its class.

Great little pump that ran great. at two year mark it finally started making noises. I cleaned the impeller and magnet casing every 2-3 months and all was going well until it started showing pitting in the magnet casing. I’m afraid the end is near for my little pump that could. For what you pay can’t go wrong.

    • Logan Vanghele (store manager)

      Hey Louis,

Thank you for your feedback! The Impellers are considered a wear part and the manufacturer recommends replacing them annually. I reached out to you in regards to a replacement impeller today.

Bought 2 rpms for my 54 gallon corner mixed reef and so far I love them. So many options for flow in such a small footprint. Controllers synced instantly. I have both pumps set to reef mode at 14 flow and corals seems to be happy. I would certainly recommend them.

It’s only been a few days since we set up the wave maker but it’s working great so far. It’s quiet, sleek, and produces great water movement. Would recommend!

  44. Robert Blevins (verified owner)

So far so good I would of given a 5 if it had some kind of net to keep fish and snails out.

  45. Steve Ghera (verified owner)

Nice pump. I agree with others that this does not create a turbulent zone much further than 1 to 2 feet in front of the unit, but it does move a lot of water in a laminar flow fashion. I have this in a 14-inch high by 36-inch wide by 30-inch long frag tank (bare bottom and not rock). It alone moves the 50 gallons in the tank quite gently as all LPS polyps are very gently ebbed and flowed, but it is not satisfactory by itself. I’d rate it a 4 out of 10 as a single pump in this size tank. If there were two, I’m guessing movement would increase enough to rate a 5 to 7 out of 10. My actual arrangement also has two Jebao RW8 pumps and this, combined with the RP-M creates awesome flow (10 out of 10) with no detritus able to accumulate on the bottom except in a few areas between isolation “trays” on the bottom. I chose the Reef Power over the Jebao this time to see if the value was worth the extra cost. Time will tell, but I’m initially happy and considering buying another RP-M.

  46. John W. (verified owner)

Excellent pump for the money. The pre-set functions are great and this thing moves a bunch of water. Would definitely reccomend. I like that the magnets are water proof so i can install it to my overflow!

  48. Mark A. (verified owner)

Ordered an RP-M in mid April and installed the pump 1st week in May. This pump moves a lot of water and it was more than a bit noisy for about 2 weeks. First it was noisy @70% power, then below 20% power. Adjusted magnet positioning, took it apart and reassembled every couple of days. In about 2 and 1/2 weeks the pump is silent. Bought a second RP-M and went through exactly the same process and it is dead silent now. Love the strong yet gentle flow and controller mode options. Mode 7, reverse, is a game changer just picking detritus off my bare bottom for overflow removal. I enjoy my QP-7 and RP-Ms enough to try out a 300Plus DC protein skimmer that I received yesterday. Reasonably priced, immediately shipped and my understanding is that Logan’s customer service is excellent. Haven’t needed him yet but good to know the support is there.

  49. Anthony Ferrelli (verified owner)

This is my second one. Now I have them set up as master slave and they are awesome.

  50. NICK A. (verified owner)

Shipping speed was great. This pump over delivered very quiet great features to give the exact flow I was looking to create and very powerful without blasting frags off the rack. All in all it’s a amazing pump for a ridiculous value

  51. Ronald Geisler (verified owner)

Great products, fast service, excellent support. This is why I keep coming back.

  52. Frank (verified owner)

I just bought two of these pumps. My tank isn’t set up yet, so I put one of the RP-Ms in my 220 gallon freshwater tank. First of all, I couldn’t even hear it running. I didn’t expect that. The instructions were a little cryptic, but I managed to figure out and try all of the modes. I really like it. The reverse function is awesome! I’d seen videos of how it stirs up detritus. But to see it in person is great. Stronger than I expected. The pulse mode had my six-foot long tank in a steady wave very quickly. Sorry for the novel, but so far I love these pumps. I can’t speak to longevity obviously.

They work well for what they are but quality seems to be lacking. I ordered two of these and one is pretty quiet but the other is NOISY ive tried reseating impeller multiple times over the course of 3 weeks or so but it continually gets louder sometimes it sounds like a wood pecker is in my living room and sometimes it makes a horrible chirping sound. I wish quality was up too par as they do work as advertised.

    • Logan Vanghele (store manager)

Hey Mark! This is a known issue, sometimes the impeller is misaligned in shipping. Please contact us for a new impeller and we will get your second pump running nice and quiet like the first one 🙂

  55. Joshua Baker (verified owner)

Love the product. I ordered one from brs about a month ago. One was damaged in shipping and made a cracking noise. Send it back to brs , they said it was broken and they did not have any in stock. So I got a refund and ordered from you and a week later it is still in shipping. Happy with Reefbreeders not happy with United Postal Service. They said it would be here Monday and 5 days later I am still waiting.

Awesome customer service and quick response to all my questions. Logan is great to work with.

  63. Derek Wilson (verified owner)

The first I received generated a ton of heat, raising my tank temp multiple degrees in just an hour or two. The ugly part aside, Reef breeders didn’t hesitate to walk me through testing it to see if it was my or the pump. They also didn’t hesitate to send a new unit out that has worked flawlessly on a 40 breeder. The 40 breeder is long gone but I kept this pump and try it on a 25gal Lagoon. I would buy again. (maybe a smaller unit could be made one day? hint hint)
