Meridian Edge App Documentation

Meridian Edge (App Version) documentation.

Getting Started

The Meridian Edge has an onboard manual controller. In order for the app to control your light, that must be toggled off.

1) When first plugged in, your edge bars manual control LED will be teal. Press and HOLD the button circled above for 1-1.5 seconds, then release.

2) The indicator LED will turn green. Once more, Press and HOLD the button circled above for 1-1.5 seconds, then release.

3)The manual control indicator will turn OFF. You are now ready to use the app based control.

Note: Currently in the event of a power outage, the manual control will take over once power is restored. We recommend any app powered edge bars have the manual control knob set to 0% power.

Connecting to the ReefBreeders App

With the manual control indicator LED turned off we can now focus on the indicator LED to the right hand side of your lights endcap, inside the oval antenna cover. That is your app board indicator LED. From here on out- we will be referring to only that when referencing indicator LED colors.

1) When first plugged in, your app board will boot up, and go through red, green, and blue LED colors, before settling on blinking blue approximately 1x per second. This is where we begin the connection process.

2) With your indicator LED blinking blue, open the ReefBreeders app, and tap on Add a New Device

3) Tap on Edge, then choose your Edge bar's length from the dropdown. Finally, choose your edge bar's color spectrum.

4) On the next page, tap on ready.
5) Once you see a page that says Check Connection- STOP! We're not going to tap on that just yet. Now it's time to go to your phone's wifi settings. Find and connect to your lights wifi network.

a) You should be connected to your home wifi network when you first open wifi settings.

b) Find and connect to your edge bar's wifi network

There may be a message that says "unsecured network"- that just means it doesn't have a password, and is perfectly normal.

A message saying "no internet connection" will also typically appear. Your light is not providing internet- that's also perfectly normal.

6) Once connected to your Edge bar's wifi network, the indicator LED should be solid blue. Return to the ReefBreeders app, and tap on check connection.

7) Next the app will display a list of wifi networks for the Edge bar to connect to. From this list, select your home's 2.4GHz wifi network, and enter the password. The password is both case and symbol sensitive. Double check the password before confirming. To do so- tap on the crossed out eyelid icon, and it will show your password.

8) After entering your wifi network password, tap on connect. Your indicator LED will blink blue or green rapidly, before settling on solid green.

Note: If your light does not settle on solid green, and the app proceeds to naming your device- go ahead and name/save your device anyways. After that; triple-tap the magnet to the right side of the edge bar (do NOT press and hold).

If done correctly, the light will turn on at 50% power, and the indicator LED will be solid yellow. Tap the magnet again, and the device will perform a soft reboot, where it flashes through each color channel, then reinitializes the wifi connection.

After this, it should finish on solid green. If this doesn't work on the first or second attempt, double check your wifi password.

If your wifi network has a firewall- make sure port 8883 is open. Another thing to note- having the & symbol in your network password may cause a connection error.

9) Enter a descriptive name for your edge bar. We recommend a name that indicates your device's location over your tank. For example: front right
10) Tap on continue, and you will be brought to a menu where you can test your light and verify that it is connected, as well as exploring color combinations. If your devices indicator LED is solid green, and it reacts to the sliders on this page, you are connected and ready to proceed to programming your lights.
11) Tap Next to proceed on to setting a schedule for your device. Or, tapping on skip for now will take you to the main menu of the app.
12) On the schedule page set your desired on time (sunrise) and off time (sunset). There is also an additional option for the edge bars: auto dimming. When toggled on, your edge bars will automatically reduce their output when they reach a temperature of your choice. This is useful if your lights are low to the water or you are frequently touching your lights while working on your tank, for example.

13) Tap on Create Schedule to proceed to the next step and edit your program. This will open up a page with your color channels. Tap on the first color channel to enter the programming menu for that color.
14) The app will automatically start at 30% power with a 1 hour ramp up, and a 1 hour ramp down. This is displayed on the graph, which represents % power on the Y axis, and time on the X axis. The graph is a representation of your lights intensity throughout the day, with each channel overlayed to give you a full picture of your lights output.

To change to a longer ramp time, simply edit the 2 time segments. In this example, we have chosen a sunrise (on) time of 9AM, and a sunset (off) time of 9PM.

The app has automatically applied 2 time segments, one at 10AM, and another at 8PM.

In the below example, we want a 3 hour ramp up time, and a 3 hour ramp down time on the white and violet channel. So we are going to change segment 1 to 12PM (forward 2  hours) and segment 2 will be changed to 6PM (Backwards 2 hours). This will result in the white and violet channel ramping up slower, for a more gradual sunrise effect, and ramping down slower for a more gradual sunset effect.

15) To proceed to the next color channel, tap on next. This will open the same programming menu for your edge bar's second color channel. You can edit that just like the first channel.

If you want to simply copy settings from the other channel- you may also tap on "Copy From", and select the other channel from the dropdown. This will immediately copy that channels settings to the current channel.

16) Once you are finished programming the second channel, tap on next, then tap on "Save Program" (for new schedules) or "Update" (for previously created schedules).

You will then be prompted to name your program. Give it a descriptive name, then tap on save.

17) Once saved, you will see a green checkmark next to your schedule, indicating it has been successfully applied.

Manual Control

Manual control is useful for any time you would like to set a temporary spectrum. For example acclimating new fish, or turning the lights on early/late for guests. In this mode, you first set how long you want it to run, then set the percentage of each channel manually.

When the timer runs out your light will resume its regular program. Each time you enter manual control, the previous color settings are saved for easy reference and repeatability.

1) To enter Manual control, open the ReefBreeders app, and tap on the light you would like to control.

2) At the bottom of the Schedule screen, tap on Manual Control. Choose how long you want the manual control function to run in minutes, then tap on save.

If you tap on "Other" it will allow you to enter up to 999 minutes of run time.

3) A page with color sliders will appear. Here you can set your desired intensity for each color channel.
The Run Time (time remaining before your program will resume automatically) is displayed up top.
3) If for any reason you would like to end your manual control early, simply tap "End" at the bottom of the page.

To exit and apply manual control to another device, tap the back arrow at the top left of your screen, and repeat these steps with that device.

Groups

Foreword on groups for Edge Bars:

Groups can be used to group like devices together with the same program. Each device in a group must be the same type and spectrum.

For example, a Photon can not be grouped with a Meridian. A Meridian can not be grouped with an Edge bar.

Because there are several different spectrums of Edge bars available, some Edge bars can not be grouped together. They must all be the same size and spectrum to be grouped.

Groups are intended to be used with devices that will be sharing the same exact program- so if the color channels between each light are different, it is not possible to create a group.
